Fairlawn Green Action: Gardening

Objective statement

USE LESS WATER ON OUR GARDENS by composting and mulching with three carloads of mulch and at least 12 volunteers for work on the Fairlawn gardens every year in early May by spreading compost first, then 2 inches of mulch.  Then encourage individuals or groups in the church to “adopt a garden” for maintenance of the gardens on an ongoing basis.

Our new volunteer garden coordinator

Margaret Kolcze sends thanks for our warm and encouraging reception as Fairlawn’s new garden coordinator.

Here are our current volunteer requirements:

  • volunteers to plant donations of plants and bulbs to make our lawn and garden look wonderful next spring -- please bring your own gloves and digging tools! Dates and times are very flexible.

  • and some contributions including:

    • a bushel each of blue siberian squill, white snow drops and assorted crocus for the lawn

    • a dozen each of early, midseason and late blooming red tulips, daffodils, narcissus, hyacinth, pink tulips and allium

    • roots of spring blooming perennials such as peonies, lilies and iris

    • bone meal

You will love the spring display when we all work together!

Please contact Margaret by email or at coffee hour if you can help to get our church garden ready for Spring.  margaretkolcze@yahoo.ca

And more below ...

The Gardening Action Team will once again be sponsoring a garden event, called "Earth Angels Spruce up the Fairlawn Gardens". For the last several years a huge team of volunteers showed up for fun, fellowship, treats and a little effort to beautify the Fairlawn gardens and cover the gardens with wood chips.  Be sure to be part of the action again this year!

Outings
Fairlawn Green Action organizes group outings such as Earth Day cleanup and tree planting, Earth Hour walk under the stars and candlelit party, Earth Week worship service. See the Green Events page for details of upcoming events.

Composters
The team scrounged many additional SoilSaver composters, now located beside the church with the others. One was lined with a garbage bag to contain dandelions which will be put out with yard waste since they should not be composted.

Adopt a garden
The Gardening Action Team has set up an "adopt a garden" scheme, and all sections of the gardens have a sponsor now. If you'd like to help them out with the gardens, please contact us.

Adopt a piece of lawn
An approach of adopting a plot of lawn has begun to address those dandelions! Peter Heinz will do the lawn under the new window from the garden to the walk. Contact us to volunteer for another portion of the lawn. Why not get your own little group together , pick a piece of lawn, and make a fun event of it on a regular basis!

Get your lawn off grass!
