Objective statement

BUY LOCALLY-GROWN FOOD by first educating ourselves, then educating the Fairlawn community and facilitating partnerships with local farmers for weekly delivery of food baskets of seasonal produce to interested consumers in the community, and advocating that grocery stores stock more local foods.

Status

The Local Food Action Team  provided recommendations for working with local food box companies and local markets. We also provided a detailed display at Village Day and at Fairlawn events and coffee hour. We have published information on our web site, included information on Locally-Grown Food in our Green Tips eMails, and continue to advertise and support local organic markets in the Toronto area, in our North Toronto neighbourhood, and in Ontario cottage country.

Local Farmer's Markets with LOCAL produce

Many "Farmer's Markets" sell produce that is not actually local, but has been picked up at a central distribution point for imported produce.  Be sure to ask!

Reduce or avoid Beef

The best way to reduce global warming in our lifetimes is to reduce or eliminate our consumption of animal products.

Meat eaters are responsible for an additional 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide per person over vegetarians every year.

Livestock are responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse-gas emissions as measured in carbon dioxide equivalent, reports the FAO. This includes 9 percent of all CO2 emissions, 37 percent of methane, and 65 percent of nitrous oxide. Altogether, that's more than the emissions caused by transportation.

Environment impacts from the beef industry include:

  • cow flatulence
  • deforestation to expand pastures and to create arable land for feed crops
  • energy to produce fertilizers
  • energy to run the slaughterhouses and meat-processing plants
  • energy to pump water
  • and more
