Energy Efficiency #1

Fairlawn Green Action: Property Improvements

Objective statement

INSTALL ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTBULBS
in the Fairlawn facility for fixtures that don't require modification -- with the help of the custodians -- in a variety of locations to be determined. An inventory of energy efficient lightbulbs will be made available in future, and a variety of fixture types will be tested in certain areas, such as the sanctuary.

Educate the congregation and the neighbourhood as to the wisdom of using energy efficient lightbulbs.

Status

The “Light Brigade” charged at our incandescent lamps!

The Light Brigade team replaced all outdated technology lamps which could be retrofitted with products currently available at local hardware stores. A team of Sheila Corkill, Tom Cullen and Mike Skibinski, was led by John Cowan in replacing 108 lamps, reducing 7,700 watts from the connected load in the Church. This represented a 78% reduction. The 8-10 times longer life new bulbs in some cases have slightly different light distribution patterns and a short warm-up period. However, generally the changes were planned so that nobody noticed them!  The intent was to upgrade the lighting efficiency wherever a simple change could be made. In fact it has been gratifying that nobody has commented on the changes.

Property Council converted all the exit lights to LED's as another step in reducing electrical energy use and cost.

We are actively looking at other LED opportunities and lighting control technologies.

Another way to make significant progress in reducing our electrical power consumption would be for all users of the Fairlawn facility to turn off the lights when they or their program are finished with a space.
