Finding our social identity
Who are we and how do others see us?
The “Power Flower”
is a tool developed by Canadian social change educators when working
with groups to “identify who we are (and who we aren’t) as individuals
and as a group in relation to those who wield power in our society.”
The centre of the
power diagram is divided into 16 segments, each representing one facet
or category of our social identity (sex, race, education, sexual
orientation, social class, etc.) This centre is surrounded by a double
set of flower petals, one outer, one inner. The outer petals describe
the dominant or powerful identities in society. The inner petals are
filled in by participants and describe the social identity of each
individual. The object of the exercise is to discover how close, or how
distant, each person is to the dominant identity of their current
society. The more inner petals match the outer (dominant) ones, the more
social power that person possesses.
Find out how much
power you have in your relationships with others by analyzing your power
in several categories:

Stand up, Speak out to
eradicate poverty, Sept. 14, 2011 A seminar with Peter Clutterbuck of 'Poverty Free Ontario'

Rev. Deborah Hart of Eglinton St. Georges and Rosemary Pryde of Fairlawn
Local Study and Action on Poverty Eradication in Toronto
More
than 60 congregants of the Eglinton St. George’s and Fairlawn Avenue United
Churches gathered on Sept. 14 in North Toronto to hear and discuss the
proposals of Poverty Free Ontario for eradicating poverty in the province
within this decade.
The
SPNO’s Peter Clutterbuck made a presentation on Poverty Free Ontario and
took questions from a very engaged and committed audience.
After
question period, those assembled worked in small groups to identify what
action they might take to bring their concerns about poverty forward to
candidates running for election.
At the
end of the evening, on behalf of SPNO Peter Clutterbuck presented Rosemary
Pryde and Jannie Mills with a Poverty Free Ontario T-shirt (one of only
three produced) as a gesture of gratitude for the funding contribution of
Fairlawn Avenue United Church, which enabled SPNO to support cross-community
organizing on Poverty free Ontario in 16 communities throughout the
province.

Social Justice Sunday Jan. 30,
2011 with guest speakers: Debra
Dineen and Phil Nazar
from CRC -- the Toronto Christian Resource Centre. We focused
on our commitment to social justice, to
building a more "just and sustainable world". The Toronto Christian
Resource Centre has worked with people who are marginalized and living
in poverty in Regent Park in downtown Toronto for many years. Fairlawn
Avenue United Church has provided over $1.5 million to their 40 Oaks
affordable housing project and several of our members serve on the Board
of Directors and in other volunteer capacities. Phil and Debra reported
on the stark reality of persistent poverty in this wealthiest of cities
and provided an opportunity to think about what our faith calls us to do and
be. The service was led by Debra Dineen, Executive Director, and
Phil Nazar, Housing Manager, from the Toronto Christian Resource Centre
and Worship Leader at Regent Park United Church.
