Fairlawn Reads: Lives Still in the Balance,
Sun. Feb 6, 2011We came together to
discuss a short, compelling, sometimes shocking and moving book about
poverty in Ontario entitled Lives Still in the Balance
from ISARC (Interfaith Social Assistance Reform
Coalition)
We learned about the need for social justice in Ontario, statistics
and historical events regarding social services in Ontario, and stories
from people living in
poverty.
We discussed:
- The difference between "charity" and "social justice". Both are
good, both are required. Charity is giving of our time and money to
help others. Social Justice is doing everything we can to change the
root causes of injustice; to confront our politicians and demand
that government programs are structured to treat people with
compassion and respect and to provide everyone
with access to
decent work, livable income, healthy food, and affordable housing.
- The
possibility for "community voices to shape public choices".
- The
creative endeavors
that we, at Fairlawn, can do to be a voice for social justice.
