Hope Chest for CRC 40 Oaks, Regent Park

The CRC’s 40 Oaks project in Regent Park is currently running a short but mighty fundraising campaign to immediately furnish the 87 housing units in its new building, opening December 27. If you would like to contribute money (not used furniture) to the purchase of discounted furnishings, please click the Hope Chest Donation Form or pick up a Hope Chest form at the back of the church. Furnishing a complete unit is $5,000 but ANY amount will be put to good use! Money can be donated online or by mail. Corporate and personal tax receipts provided. Speak to Carolyn Clark, Greig Clark, Jannie Mills or Linda Spears for more information or visit http://40oaks.com/

Fill in the Hope Chest Donation Form to make your financial donation for CRC to purchase the furnishings.

Fight the proposed sell-off of affordable housing units by Toronto Housing Corporation

You have most likely been aware of all the City budget cutbacks in the news over the last month or so. One issue that has been of concern to your social justice team is the proposed sell-off of more than 700 homes owned by the Toronto Housing Corporation and lived in by residents who could not afford to live elsewhere.

We believe there are other options that the City could consider instead of this wholesale sell-off.

If you would like to help, we suggest you write to your City Councillor now -- well before Jan. 24th!

You can use the two-pager prepared by Joy Connelly as a resource -- or even attach it as is. It is our experience that personal letters work best. Snail mail or faxes gather much more attention that emails.

To find the mailing address or fax number of your City Councillor, click here: http://app.toronto.ca/wards/jsp/wards.jsp and type your home address. Your councillor's ward will appear as a link above your address. Follow the link to your ward to find your councillor's name and mailing address or fax.

Recommendations about TCH housing will go to the Toronto Executive Committee on January 24, 2012 with a vote by the full Council on February 6, 2012.

Please write now!

Heathly Food Supplement Letter

Fairlawn Motion in support of the $100 Healthy Food Supplement was sent to Queen’s Park

If you are interested in reading the letter to the Premier, click the link below. We have received an acknowledgement from the Premier’s office as well as a note from the Ministry of Finance to let us know that Fairlawn is now on a waiting list for any future pre-budget submission consultations. So we are on their radar.

Social Justice Advocacy

Funding was approved for

  • an innovative approach to developing partnerships as part of Fairlawn's social justice vision. Executive Council has approved three years of funding for a full time Advocacy Coordinator for the Toronto Christian Resource Centre in Regent Park. The money for the position will come from the St. James-Bond trust funds that were, as part of the amalgamation agreement with Fairlawn, dedicated to support social justice work. As well as working at CRC, the Advocacy Coordinator, Rene Adams, will also be available one to two days a week to support the work of our Social Justice Team at Fairlawn.

  • a social justice position at Toronto Southeast Presbytery was funded. Here is a description in Beth Baskin's own words:

The Social Justice Project vision is that; “United Church congregations, inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, will be actively and effectively engaged in social justice ministry and become visible advocates for just and sustainable communities.”

My name is Beth Baskin and I am the staff person who is, in collaboration with the steering committee and interested congregations, working towards this vision. My primary tasks are:

·         to facilitate the development of a social justice ministry within and amongst Toronto Southeast congregations

·         to help congregations find their voices and become more effective advocates as they work for political, social, and economic solutions to the root causes of injustice

·         to support the development of the capacity of these congregations to assume ownership of and provide leadership for their ongoing social justice ministries.

This project is about enabling some congregations to do what they have envisioned in the area of social justice and to support other congregations in the visioning and then moving to action. This project is for those congregations who want:

·         to develop a more active social justice response to the gospel

·         to connect with marginalized persons and work with them to change the systems that keep our brothers and sisters on the margins

·         to connect with other congregations and organizations affecting change in the world

40 Oak Street $1,500,000 87 units $1,500,000 to the Christian Resource Centre (CRC) for the redevelopment of 40 Oak Street into an 87 unit apartment building in Regent Park for the ‘hardest to house’ -  individuals who are homeless or at high risk of becoming homeless.
