Fight the proposed
sell-off of affordable housing units by Toronto Housing Corporation
You have
most likely been aware of all the City budget cutbacks in the news over the last
month or so. One issue that has been of concern to your social justice team
is the proposed sell-off of more than 700 homes owned by the Toronto Housing
Corporation and lived in by residents who could not afford to live
elsewhere.

Social Justice Advocacy
Funding was approved for
- an innovative approach to developing partnerships as part of
Fairlawn's social justice vision. Executive Council has approved three years of
funding for a full time Advocacy Coordinator for the Toronto Christian Resource
Centre in Regent Park. The money for the position will come from the St.
James-Bond trust funds that were, as part of the amalgamation agreement with
Fairlawn, dedicated to support social justice work. As well as working at CRC, the
Advocacy Coordinator, Rene Adams, will also be
available one to two days a week to support the work of our Social Justice Team
at Fairlawn.
- a social justice position at Toronto Southeast Presbytery was funded.
Here is a description in Beth Baskin's own words:
The
Social Justice Project vision is that; “United Church
congregations, inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, will
be actively and effectively engaged in social justice ministry and
become visible advocates for just and sustainable communities.”
My
name is Beth Baskin and I am the staff person who is, in collaboration
with the steering committee and interested congregations, working
towards this vision. My primary tasks are:
·
to facilitate the development of a social justice
ministry within and amongst Toronto Southeast congregations
·
to help congregations find their voices and become more
effective advocates as they work for political, social, and economic
solutions to the root causes of injustice
·
to support the development of the capacity of these
congregations to assume ownership of and provide leadership for their
ongoing social justice ministries.
This
project is about enabling some congregations to do what they have
envisioned in the area of social justice and to support other
congregations in the visioning and then moving to action. This project
is for those congregations who want:
·
to develop a more active social justice response to the
gospel
·
to connect with marginalized persons and work with them
to change the systems that keep our brothers and sisters on the margins
·
to connect with other congregations and organizations
affecting change in the world
