How to get started volunteering
“Don't ever question the value of volunteers.
Noah's Ark was build by volunteers; the Titanic was built by professionals”

Looking for a boost?
Want to make a difference? Want to share your talent and skills? Want to
discover new things about yourself? Become a volunteer. Follow these four
steps and before you know it, you’ll be on your way to becoming a volunteer!
|
Step 1 |
Decide why you want to volunteer
If you want to volunteer but you aren’t sure what kind of position
you are looking for, ask the following questions
-
What are you passionate about?
-
What skills, talents, interests or
hobbies do you have?
-
Do you have any special training or
course that you wish to make use of?
-
Are you looking to gain career-related
skills or experience? If so, in what area?
-
How much time can you realistically
offer?
-
Do you have any previous volunteer
experience? If so, did you like what you were doing before or
would you like to try something different?
-
Do you like to volunteer individually or
as part of a group?
-
Is there a group of people that you are
particularly interested in working with (e.g., children,
seniors, youth, women, etc…)

Step 2 |
Seek advice
If you
need assistance, you’re not alone. It’s not always easy to discover
rewarding opportunities that suit your talents, interests and
schedule.

Step 3 |
Choose an area of interest
There are numerous volunteer opportunities available at Fairlawn.
Here are a few categories which you might want to explore:
administration, organization, outside greeter, usher, communication,
environmental protection, fundraising, gardening, building
maintenance, social justice, youth, children, education, finance,
outreach, etc. You could attend a monthly meeting of
a committee, or spend a few hours for a specific project, or
share some time on Sunday when you are already at church. For
example, on Sundays, we’re always looking for ushers, Sunday School teachers, coffee hour
helpers, and collection plate counters.
