There’s No ATM in the Wilderness: Reflections for Lent

Every Sunday morning until March 28th

We need to break the silence about money! This sentiment is often expressed in church circles, and entire stewardship events have been developed on the theme. Actually, though, we frequently talk about money. What we are silent about is the significance of money in our lives—how it both affects and reflects our relationships with God, with others, and with the earth. Increasingly, people are defined—both by others and by themselves—by the concrete amount of money that shapes their lives. There’s No ATM in the Wilderness invites you into a spiritual journey that explores your relationship with money and its impact on your faith life.

When:  Sunday Mornings 9:00 -10:00 a.m.  February 21st – March 28th

Where:  Kimmel Room

How To Join:  Please contact Rev. Stephen Iverson at 416-481-6848 ext.26

ADMINISTRATION

A Congregational E-mail Went Out Last Week

A copy is posted in the Assembly Hall. If you have email and did not receive it, and would like to receive future notices, please notify the church office.

Donations for Book Sale

We welcome donations of books, CDs, DVDs, etc.  Please place donations in the box beside the elevator.  If you are unable to bring your books to the church, please contact Bob Stobie

at bstobie@pathcom.com for pick-up.

Flowers to Grace The Church at Easter

Each Easter the church is decorated with flowers donated in memory of others or as an expression of gratitude.  The price of each plant is $15.  If you wish to purchase a plant, please place your funds in a separate envelope addressed to Janet Gordon, our church administrative assistant, including your name and the name(s) of the person(s) to be memorialized.  Place the envelope on the offering plate or drop it off to the church office.  The deadline for orders is Monday, March 29th.  Plants will be available to pick up either for yourself or a shut-in you know after the service on Easter Sunday. Please note: We will not be issuing tax receipts and we ask that you should only take a plant if you paid for one.

Alternative Memorials:

If you do not wish to buy a plant but would like to make a donation (to special music, the heating project, the memorial fund, etc.) in memory of a loved one at this special time of year, you may do so and your name will be noted in the bulletin.  (In this case, a tax receipt will be issued).

A REPORT FROM THE JOINT SEARCH COMMITTEE

The Joint Search Committee (JSC) has started its work. The JSC’s mandate is to fill the two positions described in the Joint Needs Assessment Report: Minister of Worship, Pastoral Care and Adult Faith Development (1 FTE) and Church Community Developer (0.6 FTE). The members of the JSC are Derek Wishart (chair), Maureen Davey, Morrey Ewing, John Gotziaman, Trish Jones (corresponding secretary), Doug Knights, Lorraine Molloy, Carol Reader, Jane Rounthwaite (recording secretary), Paul Stott (presbytery representative), Rev. Larry Beech (presbytery representative). We will be following the process established by the United Church in the Handbook for Joint Search Committees. Copies of the handbook can be downloaded from http://www.united-church.ca/files/handbooks/jsc.pdf or Derek Wishart can provide a copy. A key theme of the JSC Handbook is the need to keep confidential the names of candidates. As a result, the JSC members are not at liberty to discuss who is or is not a candidate. Please respect the confidential work of the committee. Shortly the JSC will place ads for candidates. If you would like to recommend a candidate, please send your suggestion to Trish Jones, our corresponding secretary at pjones1225@rogers.com or by letter to 8 Covington Road #1009, Toronto, ON M6A3E5. The JSC will provide regular updates to the congregation on its work. Our next update will be at the AGM on March 7th.

Please send announcements for the bulletin to janet@fairlawnavenueunited.ca

by NOON on Wednesdays.
