Every Sunday at 10:30 am, people
gather in the sanctuary at Fairlawn Avenue United Church to worship God
as a congregation. The service at Fairlawn Avenue is traditional, but
within that context we explore what it means to be a Christian in
today’s world and ask some of the big questions that present themselves
in our day-to-day lives. Our Minister of Worship preaches on Sundays,
and we occasionally invite guests to further stimulate our thinking; for
example, Raheel Raza, well-known Muslim author of Your Jihad, Not
My Jihad; Martin Maxwell, Holocaust survivor and WWII pilot;
Lynn McDonald (Sociology Professor, former
MP & environment critic, a founder of Just Earth) on “A Time to Speak of
Poverty, Climate Change and the Role of the Churches”.
On
Heritage Sundays a variety of speakers, who have played a role in the
history of our church, challenge us into the future.
The
music at Fairlawn is second
to none. Our Senior Choir, directed by Eleanor Daley, leads every
service with an introit and two anthems. And if you are in your seat
before 10:30 am, you will hear preludes performed by our soloists, alone
or in small groupings, or by our Junior and Intermediate Choirs!
Several times a year, we
celebrate Communion. All believers, no matter what their background
denomination, are welcome to participate in the sacrament. (Note: We are
careful to provide gluten-free communion wafers so that no one is
excluded for health reasons.) Special services round out the year at
Fairlawn Avenue: two special music Sundays, the Christmas pageant, Lessons and
Carols, Christmas Eve, Heritage Sunday, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and the
glorious celebration of Easter are eagerly anticipated.
During the service, we provide a staffed
nursery so that babies can be left in a safe, caring environment while their
parents take part in worship, and a toddler room provides care for children who
are mobile! Older children leave early in the service to go to
Sunday School
classes appropriate to their grade level.
And most Sundays after the service, we
gather in the Assembly Hall for coffee and conversation.
You would be most welcome to join us
for worship any or every Sunday at Fairlawn Avenue United Church! |
