Fairlawn Young Women’s Group

Joining a new church can be a daunting process, trying to find the right match of what works for you, and for your family. Looking for a stimulating place to worship and finding a sense of quiet and peace for at least an hour on Sunday mornings is important to one’s inner self as well as the family unit.  It has to work for everyone.

Young families who do come to church often feel disengaged from the rest of the congregation. They rush to church, and exit quickly at the end of the service to collect their children from Sunday school. They may have a brief moment to acknowledge other parents of children in the same class, but most collect their children and belongings, and rush home for lunch or the next activity.   Busy lives!

To address these issues, Fairlawn’s Network Committee has established a Young Women’s Group that ‘meets’ twice a year in a casual setting, usually fall and late winter, to provide an opportunity for these busy moms and their counterparts to get together over a glass of wine, with no-one tugging at their sleeves.

It offers an opportunity to meet other women in the church their age, or with children around the same age. It’s our chance to welcome new families, to help them make introductions and give them names and faces to look forward to seeing at church on Sunday mornings.  While building the younger population, it strengthens the whole church community, making it appealing for other young families to join.

Our list of invitees comes from the participants in the Sunday school, but the group is not restricted to women with children, but forms the age group of the women involved. We have a dynamic mix of about 30 dedicated moms and young professionals. Invitees are encouraged to bring a friend if they would be interested.  Attendees often bring a small appetizer to contribute, but there is no obligation to do so. There is always lots of food!

The evening usually starts out around 7:30 pm with a mixer to make people feel comfortable.  The evening is broken down into 2 parts: social and business, with a “Come when you can, Leave when you wish” philosophy. The social part is all about welcoming new people, and re-establishing old friendships.  The business part may be asking if there are any concerns that need to be addressed, or any Children’s Education suggestions. We support Families Helping Families with games and toys for children at Christmas time, and support each other in times of need.
